Programs open on to task bar at computer start up

Does anybody know how you prevent programs opening up and showing on the task bar? I have several that do that and I very seldom use them. If they can be removed, will it have any effect on my computer, beneficial or adverse?

Depends what they are, tonynoarm. You can stop them loading at startup by going to Start > Run, type in:

msconfig

and click OK, then click the Startup tab and untick the entry that refers to the programs. Then reboot your computer. They might also have a shortcut in your Startup Folder, so check that out as well.

There might even be an option within the program itself to stop it loading on start up.

MAJ I ran msconfig and removed all but one of the programs. The remaining item relates to a scanner that I removed from my computer but did not seem to appear in msconfig - any more ideas please?

Also where do I find the start up folder?

If you're using XP it will be at:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your name\Start Menu\Programs
