programs that load on start up

Can anyone tell me how to display all the programs that load when a laptop boots up?
I'd like to see what is actually running in the background when no programs are open and only the desktop is displayed.

Run MSCONFIG and click the startup tab.

msconfig Enter

CAREFUL pruning of this list will reduce what is running at start up.

When you reboot you will get a message box about running selective start up, tick the box in the corner and close the box.
