programme backup & re-install

I am going to upgrade my system - new motherboard;new processor;extra memory; plus installing Windows XP Pro to replace XP Home.
Therefore obviously I do not want to backup my whole system.
Is it possible to save my many installed programmes by burning their 'programme folder' to disc, to re-install after the upgrade? If at all possible I do not want to have to re-install them from their original discs (some of which I do not have) and re-download their updates and patches.
I have already saved the work I have done using these programmes.
Thanks for any help.

It's next to impossible to backup and resinstall programs because of the many changes made to the registry when they are installed; as you will have a different OS installed, even saving the keys in the registry will not work.

Thanks Diodorus Siculus for your help and the information.
It looks as if I am in for many hours of installing and updating.
