I use W98SE & somehow I've lost the file PROGRAM.EXE. The SFC is unable to recover it from my installation disc. Anyone know where I can download a copy & where it should be located?

You may have to copy the following text, paste it to your address bar, and remove the spaces:

Thanks folks; I've done what article 191219 suggested but Windows Update still doesn't work & if I use the direct link to MS Windows Update it fails during the check phase with "Cannot find PROGRAM.EXE".

Or just key in the Knowledge Base article numbers into the KB Search field.

Thanks Stuartli. I'll search the KB for "Windows Update not working" or some such, see if there's owt there.

Guess what? All of a sudden, without me "fixing" anything, Windows Update (Start menu) works OK & got me the IE6 patch I was after when things went wrong! Who said there's no magic left in the world...?

It was probably due to the sheer weight of numbers trying to download all these critical patches..:-)

I use the home pages for XP, Internet Explorer, DirectX, Windows Media Player etc to get a direct link to any updates along with the relevant information about them.
