Program files

I inadvertantly dragged a program icon out of "My programs" (from Start Menu) onto my desktop when, what I meant to do was copy it to the desktop. Can anyone tell me how I can get it back where it belongs please.

It's just the reverse of what you did. Click and drag the Program Icon over to the start button, the menu should then come up, navigate to the place where you want it to be, and let go of the mouse button.

Thanks Recap - all back where it started from again.

huzzar, if you want to move some of the programs around, say for instance Paint you can move it from Accessories to the Program menu by drag and dropping it.
