Program asks for 256 colours

I am trying to run some old educatinal programs for my daughter.
the setup says the program cannot run as the PC cannot use 256 colours.
My settings for the screen are only for 16, 24 and 32 bit colour. Presumably this is because xp doesn't use / support earlier colour standards? Unless it is to do with my screen, an "old" 15" NEC TFT (still perfect after 4.5 years, thank you NEC!)

Is there any way around this?

I disabled my video cared, but the colour options remained the same.
Thank you!

Have you tried running the program in compatability mode?

I agree - right click the program file in Windows explorer and select compatability - then you can choose to run the program in 256 colours.

If you are using Dorling Kindersley software then have a look at click here

and click here

There are some known issues with windows service pack 1 on xp-try applying the patch from the "click here" button in the second link.

That solved all the problems woith display/audio for me.

Using the compatibility mode solved the problem, with minimal problems remaining.
thanks again.
