Product Key Conflict

Can anyone explain please the reason for the difference between the Product Key on an official MS label stuck on the outside of my 4 year old HP Pavilion 310 and the one found in the registry by a key finding program? Which is likely to be correct?

Probably either one. Some suppliers set up XP machines in batches using volume licenses and as long as your computer is working I shouldn`t worry about it. The sticker will have a legitimate licence key in case you have to re-install XP.

Hi Taff,

I've just done a search on the Helproom Forum and come up with a possible answer. It's not quite as you suggest. As I read the thread concerned, OEM batch installers use the Key found in the Registry and the one on the outside of the case is disabled by Microsoft, tho' this doesn't seem logical. Anyway, I've got both so I can give either a try and see where it gets me. Thanks.
