Processor speed comparison

I am a bit confused! I have seen a laptop with a AMD 3000+ 64bit processor. I have seen another one with an AMD Turion 1.8Ghz processor. How can I compare the two processor speeds and how does this compare with Intel processors?
Thanks

you can compare a 3000+ to a 3Ghz intel equivalent.

That is over-simplifying it somewhat, as it does not take into account the substantial difference between desktop and notebook CPU architecture, or indeed the difference between single-core and dual core CPUs with comparable-on-paper clock speeds.

All Athlon 3000+ 64's run between 1.8Ghz and 2.0Ghz.

What makes the BIG difference is the model of the 64. Take a sempron 3000+ running at 1.8Ghz socket 754. This is rubbish against a true AMD 64 socket 939 click here
