Processor processor

Processors get "faster" and "faster" but what actual effect does a faster processor have? I can't believe it makes much difference to MS Word but is it important in, for example, heavy database applications or editing photos. I ask because I am about ot buy a new beast and while the temptation is to acquire the fastest processor I can afford there seems little point if there is little difference from my ageing 2.4 P4! I am not a gamer.

Spot on !
You've identified the one real stupidity behind the Ghz race, unless you're a gamer, a heavy duty number cruncher or into heavy duty 3D graphics or video editing. the practical day to day gains for going top of the range are negligible.
