Problems viewing certain sites

I am having real trouble viewing certain web sites. On many occasions photographs just appear as a red cross in the corner and on some sites the links do nothing at all. Some sites won't let me in at all, telling me that my browser settings need adjusting, but I don't understand what the hell this means. Can someone please help. I am using windows xp.

Internet explorer.

Open internet explorer, go to tools, internet options and click on the security tab.
You can reduce the level of security there.

If that doesn't work try (temporarily) disabling your firewall, if that works you'll have to decide if seeing the pics is worth the risk of leaving your firewall off.
My firewall does have this effect, so if there's something I'd really like to see I disable it only long enough to view that pic.

Or go into Tools>Options>Advanced tab, scroll down and check Show All Pictures.
