Problems uninstalling McAfee

A friend is trying to remove a trial version of McAfee antivirus from his new Acer PC so that he can install Kaspersky, for which he already holds a licence. However, although he uninstalled it through control panel and it was shown as removed, Kaspesky refuses to install because it says McAfee is already installed on the system. He has tried rebooting the PC with no effect.
I know some antivirus programs can be very troublesome to remove and wondered whether anyone could advise how to completely rid the PC of McAfee?

Best way to remove McAfee is to stop all the related services.

Disconnect from the internet, then go to the Services window (press Windows Key & R then type services.msc in the Run box) and right click on any services that mention McAfee and select Properties, in this box set the start-up type to Manual and press the stop button. Click Apply. There will be 3 or 4 McAfee services.

Now reboot your PC and have another go at un-installing.

It's probably a good idea to make sure you've downloaded a new AV program (but not installed it) before doing this, so as to be sure you're not venturing onto the web without adequate protection...

Thanks to all who responded and especially to skidzy, whose solution cured the problem. My buddy was delighted!
