problems on start up

I have a laptop running on windows xp. On switching it on I get error message
Checking File System on C
The type of the file system is NTFS
The volume is dirty
CHK DSK is verifying files

It does what it has to do but sometimes freezes and my internet is running very slow.
Why is the above, help anyone.

Empty your Recycle Bin, and clear your Temporary Internet Files then Defrag your Hard Drive.

Then run a full Check Disk, all Options, there are 5 things it checks.

My Computer > Local Disk > Right Click > Properties > Tools > Error Checking > Click both. Then Re-boot your Laptop and make sure it's all running and go out to Lunch, possibly Dinner as well, it's a potentially long process.

A battery will not last long enough.

Firstly try running your Antivirus and antispyware in safemode, tapping F8 on startup will get you into safe mode.

Also try:Start/My Computer/right click the drive in question, normally c: Properties tools and check the disk for errors, while your there Defrag also.

If things do not improved, try going to the drive manufactor and look for any drive diagnostic tools.
