Problems recording with microphone

EEK! and Double EEK! I need to record voice overs on my new PC. When I try using a mic/headset to record, the play back sound has an echo effect as if recorded in a bothroom (no I have switched on any recording effects). I have tried the head set on my lap top, and that works well. I have tried both Sound Forge and the Windows recorder, and get the same results. I do not get any other sound problems with the PC. Plays back CD's/DVD's and records both without any trouble. The sockets are on the front of the PC. Operating system: XP, Athlon 64 bit, 1GB RAM. I have tried the sound wizard which went through a test - still got the "echo" faint recording. Device Manager shows no conflicts. The sound card seems on board: Realtek AC97. There is also an ATI multi media system installed. Even with the volume control for the mike at maximum the problem remains. I rang Tiny the makers, (£1 per minute!) and they did not know how to solve the problem. Help!
