Problems with my sound card

I have a Sony Vaio PC on windows XP and i just have the default sound card that has come with the computer. Recently when i have been turning on my computer the sound works, but then about a minute after windows has started up the sound just dies and i cannot hear anything.
If i go to "Sounds and audio devices" in Control panel then it says i apparently have "no audio device" and all the controls are greyed out.

Could I fix this problem with a new sound card or is it windows acting up?
