problems with my laptop

  gordonstanton 06 Jul 11

i have got a sony vaio laptop a vgn nr21z. ive had this for over 5 years and never had a problem with it until recently. the screen goes unexpectedly into a mass of colours and often changes colours and i cannot do any work, i cannot even see icons nothing at all to be honest, ive tried rebooting and often i thought i had got rid of the problem but while working it simply comes back until now where i cannot get rid of it at all. a friend suggested that it could be my graphics card, however i would like to know if anyone on here can give me some idea or good advice. ie! change my graphics card etc. thanks and hope i get some help. Maybe just the graphics driver needing updated.

Try device manager and see if there are any yellow exclamation marks on there.

If none the graphics card may still need updating.

I downloaded Driver Max yesterday to see what new drivers it could find as I was having a bit of bother with my computer.

As it worked out I needed a couple which were not the ones I was in need off but downloaded them anyway.

You can only update 2 drivers a day when using the free version and if you have to download any make sure that they are digitally signed as Microsoft does not like unsigned drivers.

Worth a try if no further information becomes available.

This sounds like graphics overheating

First of all try blowing out the vents on the machine to clear as much fluff as possible.

Do the graphics work before windows boots?

Try an external monitor to see if graphics chip or screen.

i have tried blowing the vents clean, i have tried to use an external monitor but i dont even get a connection there for whatever reason. and finally when i first turn the laptop on it instantly goes into all the colours and i can hear windows loading in the background. any help please would be great. If unlucky bad graphics chip

If lucky just a bad connection from motherboard to screen (why I suggested try eternal monitor) Connect external monitor and use Fn+ one of the F keys (blue screen symbol) to switch from TFT screen to external.

Screen cables can come loose with constant opening closing of lid
