Problems logging on to server with Vista Home Prem

Hi, I'm struggling to log a Vista HP laptop onto a Mac server. Have gone through the registry editing routine and changed LmCompatibilityLevel from 3 to 1, but still no further forward. One thing I noticed is that when I enter the username set up on the Mac into the log-in dialogue Vista adds the laptop computer name followed by backslash in front. I have not seen this when logging onto other servers. Could this be the cause of my problems as I assume the Mac is not expecting to see this? If so, how can I control what is sent by the laptop?

When I access my Mac over the network from Vista, I must enter a Username which consists of the Mac's IP address followed by my Mac Username, which in my case is:

192.168.3.22\mike

and then my Mac Password. For this reason, my Mac has a fixed IP address in the LAN. Substituting the Mac's "Computer Name" *DOESN'T* work for me.
