Problems installing office XP Pro.

Hello everyone,
I have just upgraded a friend's PC with new CPU, m/board and HDD. Re-installed Windows 2000 Pro (she happened to have this OS and was happy with it). Everything fired up fine, all drivers, devices etc. working fine. Downloaded and installed AVG, Ad-Aware and SP4 for Windows 2000 from the internet, no problems.
Now I come to try to re-install Office XP Pro.from CD and I get the message:
"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personne; for assistance".
So, dear "support personnel", does anyone have any ideas as to how I might solve this?
Many thanks,
Richard.
