Problems installing Office 2007

Good morning all.
I recently bought Office 2007 and am trying to install it on my son's PC (running XP home). The installation soon stops, with an error message related to the need to remove any traces of previous installations of the Beta version (which used to be installed on this same machine).
I have tried to identify and delete any installation data and registry entries left over from the Beta version, but still Office won't install.
I have looked at the Microsoft article on this problem (presumably it's quite common?) but the article is very unhelpful about what, specifically, might be left over that is preventing the installation.
Any suggestions would be very welcome, as I have quite a few £ tied up in the Office software!
Also, as my son is considering upgrading his OS to Vista, is there any likelihood that this might fix the Office problem?
Thanks,Richard.
