Problems entering an ip address

Hi - I have had a problem with connecting to the network on one of my office computers. I finally managed tonight to connect to the network after putting in a new network card however I am unable to enter an ip address as the computer will not let me enter anything in the relevant box. It only lets me allow the computer to enter an ip address automatically. I have not come across this problem before. As I cannot enter an ip address for the computer, I cannot get connected to the internet or to the proxy server to collect and send emails. Does anybody have an idea what is causing this? I am running win98se

Thanks Jo Jo H

Hi - I forgot to mention in my previous mail that I also cannot enter a subnet mask
