Problems with cd/DVD Drive

Invariably when a disc is put in the drive, my system does not recognise that there is anything there. Have viewed the settings of the drive, have defragged, cleaned up, started in Safe mode and deleted reference to the drive all to no avail.

Even restarted the computer with Windows 98SE and start up disc which confirmed in DOS that the drive is functioning and was able to identify the files of the CD.

What else can I do to get the cd/DVD drive functioning properly?

Thanks,

Is this a new cd/DVD dirve if so it may not have been installed properly.

Have you tryed different types of CDs and DVDs

You may have to go to device manager uninstall the device and re-install.

Does the CDs and DVDs actually work when clicked on or do they not auto run

Is it CD-Rs that it doesn't read, or factory-made ones? Some combo drives can't read home-burned CD-Rs.

If it won't read anything, then it's probably faulty.
