Problem with Virgin Internet and Netgear Routers

I've had a problem with my Virgin cable internet for a while where I've had to turn off and then on the wireless router, a Netgear WGR614 v9. I then worked out that I could log onto the router, go to the setup page then Connection Status, click release and then renew the IP. Then it works fine.
I've now noticed the same problem at another person's house, same router but version 6 and virgin internet (cable). Is this a general problem with Virgin's internet? or a common fault with the router? or something completely different....

It is quite quickly fixable by making a shortcut to the specific router page e.g. click here , but thats not ideal!
