problem updating windows xp

when running window xp update i get a list of crirtical updates but after clicking on update and the download box opens nothing happens the download does not start.
any ideas please

Do you have a pop-up stopper? If so, disable it.

It does happen from time to time. Sometimes it may be the microsoft server being busy, or for some reason it's not responding. You can try cancelling it and start again.

I usually avoid installing it directly from Windows Update, or even using the Windows Update Catalogue, where the downloading is usually slower.

What I do is let Windows Updates scan for available updates, then for each update, there is a "Read More" link, click that, maximise the window and you will see a bulletin, where there is a link to the download for different operating systems. Click the right link and you will see a download button. You can then save it to your hard disk (and if you have a download manager which searches for mirror server sites, it's quicker), then after downloading, double click the .exe file to install it.

Downloading this way is always quicker and more reliable.
