Problem with a slide scanner

I have a Prime Film PF 1800 slide scanner. When I try to scan a slide, the following message comes up 'initialise scanner - please wait'. And nothing happens - even after 3 or 4 minutes. I repeatedly send error reports (I use MS XP operating system) but with no result. To try and resolve the problem, I removed the programme from the computer and re-installed it. The scanner worked perfectly for half a day and then stopped and I continued to get the above result. Does anyone know how the problem can be resolved?
