Problem setting resolution on Viewsonic Monitor

I have purchased a Viewsonic VX924 Monitor to connect to my Compaq Evo N600c laptop using Windows 2000. In the monitor user guide it says "Optimum resolution for this monitor is 1280 x 1024".

When I go to the settings for Control Panel/Display and drag the pointer from 1024 x 768 up to 1280x1024 the bottom task bar disappears and I can only see a portion of the screen. Is it possible for me to raise the resolution up to 1280x1024 and see the whole screen satisfactorily or am I limited by the graphics card in the laptop? In which case I will just have to accept that I will need to operate the new laptop screen and Viewsonic momitor at 1024 x 768.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

After you've dragged up the resolution - press the auto-adjust (or similar) button on the monitor, to scale the picture to fit correctly.

I think this is because you are trying to alter the display settings on both monitors at the same time, the two screens are different sizes and will require different resolutions.

From control panel, click on your adaptor tab and set up your laptop to 1024x768 then select the second, or external monitor and set this to 1280x1024 for the Viewsonic.

Depending on the make of your graphic card the options are slightly different, but they are there.

Thank you both. Djohn, I'm afraid I can't find the adapter tab for the external monitor in Control Panel. I looked under Display but there was no such tab. Should I be looking somewhere else please?
