Problem with search engines

I have been asked to look at a computer you can go on line no problem, but you can not get any search engine to work.

I do not know all the details not seen the machine yet.

Vista Home, BT Hub and a family who are very good at tinkering with settings (but nobody ever does anything) would appreciate some pointers as to the problem.

When you go online (I presume by clicking IE) what do see...
What happens if you type say click here into the very top line of the browser and press enter.

Just reading your question again I think you need to be sat in front of the thing really :)

With any web problems open an elevated command prompt by typing cmd.exe into Vistas search box and then right click that program (cmd) to run as admin.
Now type,
ipconfig /flushdns and press enter.
Then type, net stop dnscache and enter, followed by, net start dnscache and press enter.

I know should be in front really you given me a pointer at least. I know they tried to set up a proxy server I think the problem stems from their.

Update the system was completely screwed (nobody had done anything to the computer). Advised the family to restore to factory settings.
