Problem saving JPEG images from Web Sites

For some time now, whenever I save a picture from a web-site to My Pictures (XP) it arrives as a file which needs to be opened manually.
I usually select I.E. from the list provided but the box marked "Always use this prog.etc.." is shaded and un-checkable. This quirk was not there before, so I assume I have somehow inadvertently changed a setting somewhere. Any ideas anyone ??

Are the pictures being saved as jpegs still? with the jpg or jpeg extension? Try clearing your internet temp files - in IE go to Tools/internet options/temporary file/delete files.

Thanks for the tips. I've cleared the Temp. Internet Files and the problem looks sorted. The settings showed 250mb of disc space allocated, I reduced this to 100mb, but how much space should I leave and how often should I delete the files ?
