Problem with PCMCIA IEEE1394 Triple Firewire Card

Hi to all

Just bought a PCMCIA card new from Ebay. Has three IEEE1394 firewire ports (6 pin)
When i plug in it shows up in hardware devices as
'NEC OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller'
Problem occurs when i plug in firewire device the laptop locks up requiring reboot. I have tried with several different firewire devices inc. maxtor 250GB external HD, nomad jukebox 3 and video camera all with same result.
This is first time i have tried a PCM card so no nothing about them but i do notice there is a small power supply type plug next to the three firewire ports. Does this mean this card requires external power to operate if so what will this be? I have multi powere adaptor any help much appreciated

OS is Win XP pro
Laptop is Dell D800 thanks in advance

I'm not familiar with laptops but I have a 3port
firewaire PCI card in my pc. In my instrs it says that if system does not work properly after connecting a device, connect board to aux pwr supply and then restart. Hope this helps.
