Problem PC

I have a XP Home, 2400 AMD 500 Gb desktop which this weekend has started behaving strangely.
The symptoms are a very slow boot up with a sky blue screen doing a disk check which then reports a failed test. When the boot up resumes, all the programmes load very slowly.
I have tried without success to do a system restore and the only software installation has been an upgrade to AVG version 8 some 5 days before the problem (thus unlikely?) and an upgrade of CCleaner which I have uninstalled to confirm if it's the culprit - it isn't.
Are there any diagnostics I can run from within XP home?
