Problem with DVD RW.

I have just installed a new DVD RW into my PC. I have checked the BIOS and it is being detected properly, and according to "My Computer" it is there, and according to the device manager it is working properly, however when I try to access it I get 1 of 2 responses. Either:

1) The request could not be performed becuase of an I/O device error.

2) F:\ is not a valid Win32 application.

Does anyone have any ideas of what the problem might be?

have you replaced a previous drive and if so has the system allocated a new drive letter?

No it's a brand new drive that has never been installed. The drive letter was once allocated to a zip drive but I moved some of the letters around so that F was free.
