Printing problems

I am trying to print photographs using Photoshop CS4.
When opening the print box in CS4 I arrange the 6"x4"picture to appear on the upper half of an A4 sheet in portrait format and set the printer settings to paper type etc and tick the preview print box. When the preview print box appears there is only a small portion of the image visible on the paper to the right of the screen. The scale of the portion of the image that is visible seems to be greatly enlarged compared to what is required.
The problem seems to occur randomly and sometimes the printer works correctly and at other times creates the problem described above.
Is there a new printer driver that is required for use with CS4? Or is there some error in the settings?
I am using a Canon ip4300 printer and I did not have this problem with CS3 or Photoshop elements 8.
