Printer vanishes?

After I boot up and try to print, I get a message saying I have no printer. When I insert my printer disc it immediately finds a driver and updates it. Why should this be happening, please?

try unpluging your usb cable to the printer restart your pc,then rewhen pc restarts plug back your usb cable.failing that go into device manager to see if your printer is listed and does it have a exlamation mark on it.uninstall the printer drivers then unplug and replug the usb may have to reinstall the printer drivers as well.

Ta mole44, I'll try that.

Sorry l24 .It's a Lexmark X1250 & I'm running WXP Pro.

You should load Drivers and software before plugging the printer in, Only plug it in when software is looking for printer

Well, everybody - I followed link to Lexmark's page, but still every time I boot up, back comes the "no printer" message. I have recently dual-booted to W7, and it doesn't work on that either!
I know a re-instal will cure it, but I don't want to do that unless I am compelled to.....

OK, problem sorted - turned out to be the spooler switching off unasked.

Thanks to all.
