Printer problem

My HP 4280 printer/scanner lost it's ability to scan. I uninstalled it and reinstalled unsuccessfully. I was advised to download the latest drivers which I did but still no joy. In the end I got an expert in to sort it out but he got nowhere until up popped a message to say that "flash ocx" was missing. Had it been there earlier a lot of trouble would have been saved. The missing link was downloaded and all was well. What can have caused the essential item to go missing? I have Vista Premium and my expert felt that a Microsoft update had caused it. Would that be correct?

Cleaning programs can remove it

Thank you. That could well be the answer, but how do I avoid that when I use one? I would rather not do a clean up than have such hassle again.

If using a Clean up program, its best to leave settings as default settings. And best to check them before running it
