are all dye based printer inks the same, I would like to use the ink I have for my HP in my Canon ip 4500

Having no idea of the manufacturer of your ink makes it difficult to answer this question. If you check the leaflet which came with the ink refills (there should be one) it should tell you what ink can be used where. Failing that go to the ink manufacturers web site and check.

It is likely the ink you have is water based in which case it should be alright, but check anyway.

I once tried using some Lexmark refill inks in an HP cartridge. They printed OK, but the ink colours must have been different, because colour printouts looked very odd.
