Printer ink refill

Looking at printer ink refills, some are for Universal (all machines), some for specific machines and models, some are marked as Dell or Epson. What is the difference, or they slightly different colours, thicker or thinner liquid or some other reason?

Colours do vary between manufacturers of both printers and refill suppliers. I don't think the viscosity is any different but may be wrong.

If you are wanting specific consistent results in colour reproduction it is better to use only one manufacturers refill ink (or perhaps recycled cartridges) as mixing may not provide what you need.

I tend to use the Universal refills as colour isn't that important and the results are 'good enough' for my needs. Sometimes kits are marked as specific because of the difference in refilling cartridges between makes of printer as well.

Universal means all. This can mean a slight quality degradation. If it's marked with your manufacturer + model the quality will be better. Best of all are original inks :D

Make sure your cartridges are suitable to refill. Many later types have electronic monitoring on board (chipped cartridges) and although you can fill them the printer won't recognise them. Some can be reset with an appropriate tool and some can not.

Inks cannot be universal for all printers as they use different techniques to get the ink on the paper. There are printers that heat the ink to get it on the paper and others (Epson) that use a piezo-electric method. See Ink jet tech
