Primax Colorado USB 9600

I have a Primax Colorado USB 9600 Scanner which no longer appears to be working. It works with the Twain interface downloaded from Primax's site, but this interface is inferior to the one which came with the scanner. I have tried re-installing the interface from the original disc but it still doesn't work, even if I completely remove all files, even hidden files, and registry entries to do with the scanner and it's software. It doesn't matter which image editing program I'm using or if I'm trying to use the interface on it's own, everytime I try to start the interface it comes up with this message:

I got in contact with Primax but the advice they gave me didn't work and then they stopped replying. I know it isn't a hardware problem and the drivers should be fine as I re-installed them completely from the original disc which has been kept safe from harm. Any ideas, guys?

Almost forgot, I'm running Windows '98 SE with an 1900 Athlon XP CPU and 256 mb of RAM. The problem occurred when I tried to remove the extra programs that came with the scanner. However even if I re-install all the programs it still doesn't work. And I've also downloaded the patch from Primax.

I ended up re-installind Windows and that has solved the problem. I would still like to know what caused it though.
