Primary Master HDD Error?

  Rogmur 17:40 24 Dec 03

First of all I would like to wish all forum members a merry Christmas and fewer PC problems in 2004.

I am trying to fix my Uncles PC (Advent 667MHz P3
Celeron? Win98)
I recently replaced the hard drive with a Maxtor 40GB.
When my uncle booted up his PC it would not load Win98, and there was a series of 3 beeps, with following message; "Primary Master HDD Error"
"Run set up, press F1 to resume"
However, when I try to run set up it reports
"No Fixed Disk Present".

I do hope you can advise

Best wishes

Check in the BIOS that the HDD is detected.

Recheck your jumpers.

have you checked the jumpers at the rear of hdd? should be set to master if it is the only drive in p.c. also check ide ribbon is fully inserted & power supply cable is fully inserted

Have you Fdisked and formatted the drive? Because Windows will not be able to see the drive until this has been done, use W98 startup floppy to do this.
