Primary Drive not detected

This from a friend on a pretty poor telephone line.

I do not yet know what computer he has, but it is about two years old and uses XP.

Switched machine on this morning, having used it yesterday as normal and not having done anything in the way of installing programs etc.

Got a message "Primary Disc (or Primary Drive ) not detected."

This way out of my knowledge.

Would appreciate any comments or advice.

Check the connectiond to the HD

Agree with rawprawn it sounds like the ribbon cable has come loose from either the motherboard or the hard drive.

As above, if the drive was faulty it would give a message like Primary Drive Failure

Could also be as simple as going into the BIOS and redecting the drives.

As pj123 says,it may not be enabled in the bios.My mates did this on its own three times last month.I kept resetting it for him without finding the reason it happened. He took it in to a repair shop last week and the guy told him it was his hard drive faulty and sold him a new computer. His was 5 years old with Win 98 o/s.
