power supply

Hello.

I've always been curious about one aspect of power supplies.

Given, say, a 600w power supply, does this mean it is consuming 600 watts all the time, or does it mean it is drawing UP TO that, depending upon the system's dynamic demands?

It simply means that if you have numerous bit of hardware, each of which requires a certain amount of wattage to run smoothly, your PSU will be able to handle everything running on your PC. It is not belting out 600w all the time, it just has ample reserves to keep things working. Some items, like the later graphics cards for example, require more power to perform properly.

IN answer to the way you phrased the question....... UP to the 600w. Most PC's will live with 600w power quite happily......

So, your saying that, (say) in one moment, the computer may be using 500 watts, in another, 300, in another 600, in another, 357, 448, 229 or whatever accorging to immednate demand?

Just thought of another, more pressing question. My new ASUS P5E mobo will be coming in about a week. I see from the publicity images that, aside from the main power connector, the secondary connector has 8 pins (My present--now dead--A8n-SLI mobo has a 4-pin connector.)

My power supply however (I only just bought the thing!) only has a 6-pin secondary connector.

What to do? Might I expect an adapter to come with the board?

Exactly correct.

In which case a safe margin of excess capacity is not actually wasting electricity. In this environmemtally conscious age that's nice to know.

Thanks, all.
