Power failure leads to very sluggish W2000

My builder switched the power supply off at the Consumer Unit whilst I had the computer running. It restarted in Bios, and I exited without saving any changes. Since then, my Norton firewall has stopped working, ViruScan hovers between hanging and not, Yahoo Messenger has stopped working, and everything else takes an age. I click on a link to a shortcut on my desktop and about 30 seconds later, something might actually happen. The computer is virtually unusable. Any suggestions?

nellie10, try restoring it back to a good configuration. Press F8 while the computer is booting up to get to the restore option.

Thanks for the thought recap, but I'm afraid it hasn't helped. Internet Explorer, Outlook all hang for a while before jolting back to life. This is often as a result of a three-fingered salute. I fear that I may have to start again.
