Post Windows7 email problem

Having successfully loaded W7 (from XP) I now have a problem with my emails. Outlook Express is gone of course and I can't find a free version of it to download but when I tried Thunderbird it seems to need an existing installation of OE to import from rather than pointing it to where my copy of emails resides. Any ideas how I should proceed?

It was suggested I try Windows Live Mail so I downloaded that and set up an account. it was much more promising and allowed me to point it to the location of all the .dbx files. It duly went through the process of importing them but at the end of it all nothing appears in Live Mail. Can anyone shed light on this and put me out of my misery?

No reply yet to this and I've just noticed there's a Windows 7 forum so I'll finish this and go there.
