On Windows 98 you were able to create a Windows shutdown shortcut using:

C:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows

Is this possible in Win2k or XP?

Cheers!

For XP, click here

w2k doesn't have the shutdown.exe unless you get the resource kit. But there are freeware programs which can do the same.

Sysinternal have a nice solution here:

There's another superb little program you can get:

You can start thinking about batch files and such if you like, but with the freeware you can get that does the job it seems pointless putting yourself through the agony pf scripting a batch.

Create a new shortcut and put this into its parameters:

c:\winnt\system32\rundll32.exe user.exe,exitwindows

It works on Windows NT and Win2K as long as you don't have any update patches applied to Win2K.

Finally, about the best overall solution I've seen so far: click here

Download the free utility and follow the instructions closely.

Rename the download to Shutdown2.exe and dump it into your System32 folder.

These are the parameters you can use:

Shutdown:

shutdown2.exe -u -t 0

Restart:

shutdown2.exe -r -t 0

Log Off:

shutdown2.exe -I

Note the -t switch, this stands for TIME.

-t 0 means the shutdown or reboot action will begin immediately without delay after clicking your shortcut.

If you wanted to delay shutdown and restart for a certain length of time then indicate the number of seconds after the -t.

-t 30 results in a 30 second delay before shutting down or restarting.

File for future ref.
