port forwarding help needed

am trying to port forward my router to speed up my downloads as it is running very very slow.
i have never done this before.
my download speed is aprox 5-10 kbs
am using a netgear dg834g v3.01 (on bit torrent)

have been on the port forwarding web site and part the way through the config it asks for the tcp and udp ports to forward (eg 1000,1012)
havent a clue what or where these are.
it also asks for my routers username and password.

can anybody point me in the right direction.

only know how to download and thats about it.

will this speed up my downloads or is there a torrent like limewire or something that will download quicker.

tried that but some of the steps wernt the same as mine so got a bit confused.
after that downlod speeds stayed the same most are 0 kds and some are 4kbs. is there a simple way to speed this up or should i try a different torrent.
