Popups from nowhere!

  JulieR 18:55 25 Oct 04

I keep getting a set of popups that appear from nowhere, even when I am not browsing the internet. I have installed the latest versions of adaware, spybot, spywareblaster and spywareguard but they have not cured the problem (cleared up some other stuff though!).

I am running Win98SE with AVG antivirus. I have just upgraded to IE6, but still having problems.
I have run Hijackthis and can't see anything obvious in the log.

Any advice greatfully received.

And if you use windows messenger, don't, download 'kill windows messenger' from

then download and install MSN messenger version 6.2 from microsoft.

I do use the MSN Messenger rather than Windows Messenger (good tip though). However, these don't look like messenger type popups - just a series of IE windows that open at random, even when the PC is sitting idle.
