POP ups help please

This evening I am getting a few pop ups like this.
"Messenger Service

Message from Warning to Spyware on 10/01/05
ATTENTION!

This computer is infected with spyware!

Are these genuine, and if not how do I block them?

have you got xp pop up blocker enabled. It is in the tools menu of ie.

You could use Firefox as your browser. It has built in popup blocker and as it is not a MS product is not a such a target.

Hi daisy2bell

To disable the Messenger Service: Go to Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. Double click the Messenger Service and change Automatic to Disabled, then click the Stop button.

I think this is done by default by installing SP2

Thanks guys. I never click on them anyway. It's just anoying. I have now done what feb has suggested, and will see if that stops it.

I agree with Hairy Yeti, get Mozilla Firefox, it's great. Mind you if everyone goes over to Firefox it will no doubt also become a target!
While you're about it, get Mozilla Thunderbird for your email. Both of these applications are very customizable to suit each users preferencies and visual taste.
