poor volume

I have just replaced my old e-machine for a new uptodate model, an e-system, which came with no speakers, therefore I plugged in my old ones hoping to carry on as before. Unfortunately the volume is so low I could not enjoy my "Phoenix Nights" dvd I thought I'd use to try out our new widescreen monitor. I have gone into every volume control I can find and turned them to maximum but no improvement. The volume does go up and down but not high enough. Any ideas?

You may need to buy a set of amplified rather than passive speakers.

Also check you have the speakers' jack plug in the correct output socket.
