My computer just came up with some weird message and then froze. I reset it and now it's saying BOOT DISK ERROR blah blah. Any ideas before I open up the case?

Go in to the BIOS by pressing delete key and see if the hard disc is detected

BOOT DISK ERROR means that either

a)the boot files on the hard drive are corrupt or

b)the hard drive has failed mechanically.

a) enter BIOS set first boot evice to CD (if not already set that way)boot from XP cd into recovery consul and type

fixmbr press enter

then type fixboot and press enter

remove CD and see if the PC will boot from the HDD

b) you need a new hard drive

I looked on the BIOS and its saying that the hard drive is in and working but my slave has gone.
Also there is a strange quiet beeping coming from the computer.
