The Safely Remove Hardware icon normally only appears if any appropriate device is connected to the system.

However, if it is still missing (the following, by the way, is for XP, so hopefully will also work with Vista), go to Start>Run and type in:

RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

(copy and paste the line)

and click OK.

This should restore the icon.

You can also create a shortcut to Safely Remove Hardware by right clicking on the Desktop>New>Shortcut.

Copy and paste the line again into the field. Click on Next and then Rename it as Safely Remove Hardware. Click Finish.

Right click on 'Start'
In the drop down menu choose 'Properties'
Click the 'Task Bar' tab
Click on 'Customize'
Scroll down till you see 'Safely Remove Hardware'
Click on the downward arrow to the right of it.
Select 'Always Show' then click ok (at the bottom of the window. The 'Safely Remove' icon will now be back in your 'Task Bar'
