Playing phone videos on pc

Hi all.
When in France a few weeks ago I took some videos of the children on the beach with my mobile. They played perfectly on the phone but on transferring them to my pc they played but with no sound. They are mp4 format and so should play with vlc or quicktime.
By googling I found that this is a common problem and that renaming the .mp4 to .3gp the sound returns. This only works in Quicktime, not VLC and is an effective but bizarre solution. I like to play videos through VLC but with no sound I am unable to.
Incidentally I don't think it is a pc problem as the same happens on my laptop (both machines are vista). Thanks all

They should play okay in Media Player, after double clicking the video file

Check Sound in Task bar that Play Back is not Mutted

As I said renaming the suffix to .3gp brings back the sound in quicktime but not vlc
