Playing audio .dat files

Hello out there,
My query concerns the ability to play audio .dat files. When you listen to music from certain websites, sometimes it may place a .dat file in the temporary internet files folder. Is it possible to play these files with a certain media player when I am not online or do I have to obtain codecs to play them in standard media players such as WMP 10? I have tried changing the file extension but with no luck.
Thanks in advance for any advice

Hi, .dat files are not for playing. I believe I am correct in saying that these files are needed by the system, but cannot be played. I am no expert, so if I am wrong I am sure that someone will soon come on and correct me.
