Play PC recorded DVD on DVD player

Just made a DVD and trying to play it on a DVD player I'm getting the message "No signal. No picture at the input. Check connections".

However a commercial DVD plays perfectly. Is it common that a PC recorded DVD won't play on a separate machine?

Which program have you used to burn it to the DVD disk with? And has the DVD that you've made been encoded to the correct format to play on a DVD player?

Check the DVD player manual for types of disk it will play.
Check the burn program for the burn format you selected to burn to.
Ensure you selected PAL and not NTSC
Joliet is the best from to burn to.
Last but not least, not all DVD players are equal- the differences are vast but as a general rule the more sophisticated/expensive the machine the fussier they get
Whilst the £20 special from ASDA will play almost anything including a grubby beer mat.
